Yom Kippur - Morning Service

Yom Kippur - Morning service
Monday, September 21 10:00am-12:00pm

In the tradition of the Ba’al Shem Tov—an 18th-century rabbi whose spiritual practice often took place surrounded by nature—we’ll hold our Yom Kippur service outdoors in the park. A special thanks to our Havurah member, Carrie Wernick Newman, who graciously volunteered to organize this gathering.

Location: Jackson Park, Hood River (Corner of May St. & 13th St., Hood River, OR). We'll use the bandstand shelter if it rains.

What to Expect & What to Bring:

Attire: Tradition for Yom Kippur is to wear white and avoid leather shoes, but please wear whatever is comfortable (jeans are totally fine!). We advise bringing a camp chair or a blanket.

Fasting: Traditionally, healthy adults abstain from eating or drinking on Yom Kippur. However, if you need a beverage or snack, please consume discreetly.

Participation: There is no clergy; we will rotate readers in a circle and join together for sections marked "All" (you are always welcome to pass as a leader). Jewish tradition encourages asking questions, so please feel free to speak up and share! The service runs about 1–2 hours (depends on how many questions & comments people share).

The Machzor (Prayer Book): We will use a packet that has evolved over the years, featuring both traditional and contemporary selections from Reform, Reconstructionist, and Jewish Renewal traditions. Most readings are in English, and all Hebrew includes transliterations. There will be no Torah service, as we do not have a torah.

If you play an instrument and want to help with music, please contact Carrie and she will send you the chords ahead of time
